2024 Taiwan-UK Semiconductor Academia-Industry Collaboration & Business Matchmaking Conference

June 6, 2024

To foster Taiwan-UK semiconductor collaboration, the 2024 Taiwan-UK Semiconductor Academia-Industry Collaboration & Business Matchmaking Conference was held by AAN (Asia Pacific Accelerator Network) on June 6, 2024, at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University. We were honored to welcome the Innovate UK team and the UK Semiconductor Delegation to the campus to strengthen Taiwan-UK connections.

▲ The event opened with a speech by Professor Huang Jing-Yao, AAN Chairman and Chief Innovation Officer of the Industry-Academia Innovation Center at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University.

Professor Huang shared AAN’s 2024 goals in the semiconductor and AI application sectors, as well as the role of Yang Ming Chiao Tung University’s Industry-Academia Innovation Center in participating in the global innovation ecosystem.

The conference was also graced by four distinguished professors from Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, who shared their expertise in the semiconductor field:

  • Professor Makoto Samukawa, Director of the Neutral Beam Process Research Center and Head of Taiwan-Japan Exchange Office
  • Professor Rui-Hua Hung, Chair Professor at the Institute of Electronics
  • Professor Hao-Chung Kuo, Director of the Semiconductor Research Center at Hon Hai Research Institute
  • Professor Chun-Hsiung Lin, Professor at the International Semiconductor Academy

Special thanks to our excellent partner, IAPS (Industry Accelerator & Patent Strategy) of National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, for recommending the following five outstanding startups that actively participated in the event:

  • DeepMentor
  • Jmem Tek
  • JCL Microwave Corporation
  • Hephatech
  • YLTLink Technology Corporation

Mr. Yen-Yi Huang, R&D Director at YLTLink Technology Corporation

Mr. Huang introduced YLTLink’s high-quality, cost-effective GaN-on-sapphire epitaxial wafers developed on sapphire substrates, primarily for next-generation power and RF devices. YLTLink is Taiwan’s first and only company to mass-produce GaN-on-sapphire for power applications.

Mr. Chung-Huan Li, Chief Engineer at JCL Microwave Corporation

Mr. Li explained that JCL Microwave differs from traditional RF connector suppliers by offering tailored solutions based on customer applications. Instead of asking clients for product specifications, they propose solutions after thoroughly understanding client needs, providing optimal comprehensive solutions.

▲Teja Potocnik – CEO & Founder of Nanomation

Ms. Potocnik highlighted that Nanomation’s software accelerates the production of nanomaterial devices by approximately 10,000 times, enabling rapid material characterization for more efficient material research and advanced commercial semiconductor applications. Having participated in Cambridge University’s flagship accelerator program and completed a pre-seed funding round, Nanomation is now seeking partnerships in Taiwan to enhance its products and meet market needs.

James Ashforthpook – Co Founder & CEO of Quinas Technology Ltd

Mr. Ashforthpook introduced ULTRARAMTM, an advanced memory technology developed by Lancaster University, designed as a universal memory solution. Using resonant tunneling, a quantum mechanical process, it achieves non-volatility through fast and energy-efficient write and erase operations, offering high durability.

▲ During the latter half of the conference, Taiwanese and UK teams engaged in 1-on-1 meetings for deeper exchanges.

The Taiwan-UK Semiconductor Academia-Industry Collaboration & Business Matchmaking Conference concluded successfully. Participants engaged in enthusiastic exchanges, creating opportunities for further dialogue and collaboration. AAN will continue its efforts to promote deeper cooperation between Taiwan and the global innovation ecosystem, bringing more opportunities and development.
